Statistical View of Tokushima

Essence of Tokushima
Tokushima Prefecture is located in eastern Shikoku and is bordered by the Kii Channel to the east, Kagawa Prefecture to the north, Kochi Prefecture to the south, and Ehime Prefecture to the west. Mountainous regions account for approximately 80% of the prefecture's total land area of 4,144.95 km2. In the central Tsurugi region, at an altitude of 1,955 m lies Mount Tsurugi, which divides the prefecture from north to south.

The Yoshino River in northern Tokushima widens as it flows towards the east, forming the wedge-shaped Tokushima plains. The foothills of the Sanuki Mountain Range to the north of the Yoshino River form an alluvial fan, while irrigated rice fields abound in the lower reaches of both the Yoshino River and the Katsuura and Naka rivers.

The hilly area on the southern slope of Bunsui-ryo Ridge comprises an abundant forest district, and the rocky mountains south of Anan City end in cliffs that meet the ocean.

Tokushima Prefecture is home to numerous unique cultural developments, including the Awa-odori Dance, a source of international pride; Awa-ai, (indigo dye), which flourished during the Edo period; and ningyo-joruri, a ballad dramas featuring dolls that served as a popular form of public entertainment in the past.

But perhaps it is best to say that the best asset we hold in Tokushima is the passion to succeed and desire to be involved in refined sophisticated techniques, which we vow to pass on to future generations. Scattered throughout the prefecture are a large athletic field, distinct art and other museums, and more, creating a well-balanced cultural environment for our residents.

Surrounded by Rich Nature
Tokushima is home to a number of priceless natural assets that add to the prefecture's enduring variety of expressions, including Yoshino River, known as Shikoku Saburo and one of Japan's three major rivers; Mt. Tsurugi, a well-known tall mountain in western Japan; the Kii Channel; the Sea of Harima; and the Pacific Ocean.

The good influences brought into our lives by beautiful water and air and a leisurely passing of time are immeasurable. Even now with the improved growth of traffic access and active exchange with other urban areas, Tokushima's natural beauty still quietly watches over the lives of its people without changing form or figure.
